H επίγνωση των γνώσεων των ιατρών – νοσηλευτών, στην διαχείριση - χορήγηση της ινσουλίνης σε ένα επαρχιακό νοσοκομείο (Bachelor thesis)

Introduction Diabetes Mellitus is a rather usual disease, which is accompanied by serious complications concerning both patients’ quality of life and life expectancy. Insulin is the main treatment for diabetes mellitus. The correct administration of insulin is very important clinically in order to control the levels of blood glucose. The most important thing is the doctor’s and healthcare worker’s correct insulin management-administration knowledge, aiming to the transformation of this knowledge to patients, succeeding thus the best result. Aim of this research to valid healthcare workers’ and doctors’ level of knowledge in insulin management-administration at a provincial hospital, as well as to check differentiation of knowledge levels and to compare sources of knowledge concerning the quality of provided health care. Method A cross-sectional research was carried out among the nurses’- doctors’ population at the Hospital of Naoussa, which is a provincial hospital, aiming to evaluate the staff’s knowledge on insulin management- administration.83 persons- doctors and nurses were asked to answer 52 questions out of a questionnaire including four basic sectors.The questionnaire was recorded on the basis of the international protocol for insulin administration (Insulin Administration- American Diabetes Association). The findings were analyzed according to the descriptive statistics method.Every correct answer was given a mark of 1, every wrong answer a mark of 0. However since there were more than one correct answers those ones were marked proportionally. Results The total percentage of success in correct answers came to 62%. Male did better comparing to female, yet the difference is not statistically important. Conclusion: sex doesn’t influence the score. Also total range doesn’t depend upon age, older people did better. Concerning education: People with a University diploma did better than the 13 ones of secondary education, having statistically serious difference. They also did better than the ones with technological education, thus statistically their differentiation was not considerable. The variables between score and service time are not correlated. Better results were found among the 11-20 years of service group. The score has nothing to do with the time of service either at the pathological or the surgery sector. The average of the score of the answers given by the healthcare professionals came to 26,28 (+-5,870). 42 would have been the ideal, as there were 42 questions totally concerning knowledge. Conclusions Health workers’ (doctors’ – nurses’) knowledge of DM who work at the Hospital of Naoussa is not at a satisfactory level. According to the research results the level of knowledge is greatly related to education and minimum detectable to experience. Healthcare professionals of secondary education, older people and very young were found of limited performance. The optimal use of the research results could help in planning targeted education to nurses’ –doctors’ staff, aiming to the correct knowledge of insulin administration. The procedure of insulin administration should be a strict, typical nursery process. Health care workers should know the right management of insulin administration succeeding thus high quality of provided health care to patients
