The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the major risk factors for stroke onset. It has been estimated that the risk of stroke incidence in people with DM is 1,5- 3 times higher compared to the general population, and that DM doubles the risk of recurrent stroke. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the association of Stroke and Diabetes Mellitus. Individual goals of the study included the prevalence of the two diseases associated with other parameters such as age, gender, the existence of accompanying diseases as well as clinical measurements (sugar, cholesterol etc) MATERIALS AND METHODS Study sample In this study I reviewed 168 people who were hospitalized in a Pathalogical Clinic of a Hospital in Northern Greece and had suffered a stroke incidence. The method of selecting the participants in the study was based on the convenience sampling until the achievement of the population-target, for reasons of cost and time saving. Methodology The clinical evidence was collected from the medical records of a Northern Greece General Hospital’s Pathological Clinic during the period 01/05/2019- 30/06/2019. The evidence collected was the following: Gender, age, type of stroke, existence of DM, existence of hypertension, blood sugar level at the time of the entrance, level of cholesterol, pre-existence of atrial fibrillation, whether or not the hospitalization had taken place in a third-degree nursing institution and the course of the disease. RESULTS 3 According to the study results, a strong association between the type of stroke and the existence of DM was recorded, as well as between the typed of stroke and the existence of hypertension. More specifically, the majority of diabetic patients had and ischemic stroke incidence, a lower rate suffered from TIA and a smaller number of them had a hemorrhagic stroke.
