Objective: To investigate the potential relationship between glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and personality traits. Method: The present study was conducted using data from 110 patients with type II diabetes, 59% being women, in rural northern Greece. Participants completed the NEO-PI-3 Personality Inventory, which is a questionnaire inventory measuring 5 major domains of normal personality. Relationships between personality traits and measures of glycaemic control (HbA1c and fasting blood glucose levels), measures of bio-markers and measures of behavioural adaptation were examined by correlation. Results: Lower HbA1c values and fasting blood glucose levels were weakly associated with higher scores for the personality domain of conscientiousness and higher scores of extraversion were associated with lower scores of body mass index (BMI). Conclusions: Personality traits such as extraversion and conscientiousness can help control blood glucose. As a result considering psychological interventions focused on improving healthy behaviours, can optimize individualized planning efficacy.
