Σταμπουλίδου, Σταματία

The current dissertation is aiming at examining the Second Chance Schools trainees’ opinions and also thoughts and perceptions concerning the use of Technologies of Information and Communication and is also trying to find out if and to what extent the development of skills related to the use of Technologies of Information and Communication is linked to the re-orientation of the trainees as far as the learning process, their profession but also the social sector is concerned so as to become equal members of the society by attending the innovative programs of the Second Chance Schools. An attempt is also ventured at pinpointing the attitudes and opinions of the trainees before they attended the Second Chance Schools and also how these attitudes and opinions have been transformed after they have attended the program. After comparing the differences in their attitudes we have extracted results concerning the efficacy of the program and also if Second Chance Schools affect in a way the trainees’ professional development but also their everyday life. The literature review did not show adequate research concerning the use of new technologies from a point of view of trainees. The number of research that was carried out, concerning the specific sector, mostly referred to suggestions of lesson plans with a cross curricular approach where the new technology is used as a tool throughout the learning process. The number of existing research mostly deals with the opinions and attitudes of the trainers in relevance with the use of new technologies. Whereas only one research was found that was related to the trainees’ opinions and attitudes on the specific subject. In order to reach the goal of the research the qualitative approach was followed as it was considered to be the most appropriate while the tool of the interview and more specifically of the open interview was selected in order to gather information. The open interview was chosen so as to avoid any interventions of the interviewer. The trainees of the Second Chance Schools of Xanthi were the subjects of the research that took place. The analyses of the data collected from the interviews showed that, although the trainees expressed some kind of fear of new technologies and mostly the use of the computer at first, after attending the specific school, their opinions were transformed into positive ones and at the same time new technologies worked as a motivation for more participation during the lesson as it provided them with the ability to visualize more complex concepts and thus contributed to better understanding. Generally speaking they adopted a more positive reaction towards new technologies and at the same time their independence and their self-confidence was seriously boosted.
