Tourism has been one of the most severe industries in modern countries for years. Its growth is rising more and more, creating a strong impact on the natural environment of tourist areas, thus degrading it and also the tourist product itself. According to tourism experts, there has been an urgent need to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism. Because of this need, the concepts of environmental certification, sustainable tourism, sustainable development, etc. have begun to rise. In the present study, a research of the most widely-used environmental certification systems is carried out and each of them is analyzed, giving the form, some definitions, the criteria categories, the limitations and the advantages, the type of control as well as the body that performs it, the recognition and finally the cost for each system separately. Subsequently, the concept of carrying capacity is investigated over time, starting from its "birth" and analyzing its various interpretations by a large number of researchers and quoting various definitions that have been attributed over time. The same chapter attempts to record the difficulties encountered during the measurement of the carrying capacity and at the end analyzes the indicators of the bearing capacity. In the third chapter, through the exploration of the definitions of viability, sustainable tourism and bearing capacity, a correlation is drawn between these three concepts and their common elements are noted, as a life cycle of a tourist destination is presented. Finally, through a primary survey with anonymous online questionnaires, useful information is provided on the knowledge, contact and preference of tourists in environmental certification systems and the resulting conclusions are of interest to the image of tourists towards environmental systems certification and sustainability
