Abstract: In the recent years, there is an increasing interest towards alternative protein sources for animal nutrition. The main factors conducing to that increase are the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy crisis and the great amounts of imported, genetically modified soy for livestock feeding. Field pea is a valuable alternative source of protein and starch and it can be successfully included in ruminant, pig, poultry and fish diets. However, field pea use as a unique source of protein is not recommended, due to the contained anti-nutritional factors, adversely affecting its nutritional value, in high concentrations.
