This paper examines the foundation of research data management practices in the context of an academic library, where value and preservation of research output, is demonstrated. In an ever-changing environment, the most modernized and multifunctional academic libraries are challenged to respond to their new roles, to contemporary trends, needs and demands that are constantly emerging in the production, management and preservation of knowledge. Using modern, mostly innovative methods and tools, these libraries are focusing on redefining their objectives, determining their audience and needs, tracing their external and internal environment, integrating research into a technologically advanced society, and finally leading to the development of an integrated and fully operational programme for the preservation of research. The aim of this paper is: a) to explore the definition of research data and the practices and procedures of their management; b) to highlight the role of academic libraries on this issue; c) to document the initiatives of institutions abroad and in Greece regarding the management of research data. A theoretical review of both Greek and foreign language literature was carried out. This thesis highlights the importance of RDM of RDM in academic libraries, the procedures libraries follow when handling research data and the approaches they can take. Furthermore , clearly this dissertation serve as a fertile ground, for research and explorations in academic libraries to integrate and use such research data management services, only after are clear the concepts and information around this issue.
