Προσβάσιμος τουρισμός (Bachelor thesis)

Παντελίδου, Σαββατώ

Access to leisure and tourism for people with disabilities is a major issue, which was enshrined in international legislation in 2006 by the United Nations Convention on Disability. This convention provides for the identification and removal of barriers to accessibility by ensuring that persons with disabilities participate in cultural and recreational life as well as in tourism services. The term Accessibility for people with disabilities in the tourism industry means to allow all citizens to participate in social life with full autonomy and safety. To be able to interact with other people in the places they visit, to choose as they wish and to travel like the rest of the world, without facing obstacles to movement. The importance of accessibility is understood when one considers that people with disabilities represent more than 15% of the population in the European Union while 35 to 40% of the population faces mobility difficulties. Despite the fact that progress has been made on accessibility and significant steps have been made in the tourism industry in some European cities, people with disabilities still face challenges that deprive them of the right to participate freely in social life. Greece is making its own effort to harmonize with international guidelines and transform itself into an accessible city. At the moment, many facilities in the capital and on some major islands of the country have become wheelchair accessible. However, the rest of the country has a big gap to fill in order to be a tourist experience for travelers with disabilities. Our country has a very important tourism profile, which is why it could invest in accessible tourism and the provision of tourism services to people with disabilities, creating benefits for the Greek economy. Finally, there is still a long way to go to achieve universal accessibility to tourism, but with the cooperation of tourism operators (governments, tourist organizations, businesses and tourists), tourism products for people with disabilities can be designed that will be supported by accessible facilities to make a sector more equal and inclusive.
