Free radical species are highly involved in the inflammatory process, and their reactions with biological systems can be reduced by the antioxidants. In most of the reported metal- NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) complexes, the co-existence of NSAIDs or/and the N,N′-donor ligands (nitrogen donors) has led to enhanced scavaging activity of free radicals, in comparison to the corresponding free NSAID. In the present diploma dissertation, it was examined the interaction of Co(II) with the NSAID diclofenac in the presence or in the absence of the Ν,N΄- donor heterocyclic ligands: 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), pyridine (py), 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), 2,2'-bipyridylamine (bipyam) and imidazole (Himi) as well as the O-donor ligand, MeOH. In addition, it was investigated the interaction of Zn(II) with diclofenac in the presence of two carboxylato donors (ligands L1, L2) and a Ν,Ν΄- donor (NO3). The metal-NSAID complexes were synthesized and characterized with physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques. The antioxidant activity of the complexes was evaluated by determining their ability to scavenge in vitro 1,1-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′- azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals. Considering the radical scavenging activity, Co-diclofenac and Zn-diclofenac complexes are better scavengers than free diclofenac for all the free radicals examined, thus indicating that metal-NSAID complexes show an increased antioxidant activity. The existing results concerning the bioactivity of Co-diclofenac and Zn-diclofenac complexes are promising for further biological studies and potential medicinal applications.
