Abstract The present study investigates the effect of diet in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, lifelong inflammation that can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract in Crohn's disease (CD) and the colon in ulcerative colitis (EC). They are diseases characterized by periods of remission and relapse and their accurate etiology remains unknown but genetic, environmental, immune, psychological and nutritional factors are to blame. The diet itself plays an important role in patients with IBD and many of them use to follow strict dietary restrictions in order to reduce the painful symptoms and prolong the remission periods of the disease. The aim of this study is to assess the nutritional beliefs, nutritional behavior and nutritional knowledge in Greek adults with IBD to enable the patient's perspective on nutritional advice to be considered. Significant conclusions were drawn from the analysis of results obtained from 40 questionnaires given to an equal number of patients. Dietary adjustments and nutritional information have been shown to be important tools for managing symptoms and reducing the duration of patients' relapse.
