he increased prevalence of overweight children is one of the most important public health problems as it has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. The effects of childhood obesity are associated with high risk factors for chronic conditions such as arterial hypertension, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, some types of cancer and other adverse effects. The modern way of life for children and their families, which tends to identify with the so-called "western" standard of living as well as other environmental factors, has been shown through numerous studies to lead to increased rates of childhood obesity. Tackling it can have significant benefits for the health and well-being of children, but also for national health services and the economy of each country. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and present the prevalence of obesity in school children aged 8-10 years in primary schools in Kastoria.

| Abstract: | Ο αυξημένος επιπολασμός των υπέρβαρων παιδιών αποτελεί ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά προβλήματα της δημόσιας υγείας, καθώς έχει λάβει επιδημικές διαστάσεις παγκοσμίως. Οι επιπτώσεις της παιδικής παχυσαρκίας σχετίζονται με υψηλούς παράγοντες κινδύνου εμφάνισης χρόνιων παθήσεων όπως αρτηριακή υπέρταση, καρδιαγγειακές παθήσεις, αντίσταση στην ινσουλίνη, κάποιους τύπους καρκίνου και άλλες αρνητικές συνέπειες. Ο σύγχρονος τρόπος ζωής των παιδιών και των οικογενειών τους που τείνει να ταυτιστεί με το λεγόμενο «δυτικού τύπου» πρότυπο ζωής καθώς και άλλοι περιβαλλοντικοί παράγοντες, φαίνεται μέσα από πολυάριθμες έρευνες, πως οδηγούν στην αύξηση των ποσοστών της παιδικής παχυσαρκίας. Η αντιμετώπιση της, μπορεί να έχει σημαντικά οφέλη για την υγεία και την ευημερία των παιδιών, αλλά και για τις εθνικές υπηρεσίες υγειονομικής περίθαλψης και την οικονομία της κάθε χώρας. Σκοπός της μελέτης ήταν να αξιολογήσει και να παρουσιάσει την επικράτηση της παχυσαρκίας σε παιδιά σχολικής ηλικίας από 8-10 ετών, σε δημοτικά σχολεία του νομού Καστοριάς. he increased prevalence of overweight children is one of the most important public health problems as it has reached epidemic proportions worldwide.
