Abstract The aim of the present study was an initial investigation of stress in primary school teachers and the factors that produce anxiety in teachers. The current research presents the results of a study conducted with primary school teachers about the factors that cause stress in their working environment and its consequences. The research instrument that was used in this study was self -completed questionnaires which were filled by 110 primary school teachers. The results of this research showed that teachers experience job stress mainly due to their working conditions, problems arising from the behavior of students and from their cooperation with the parents of their students, lack of cooperation in the workplace, workload, deficiencies in infrastructure, bureaucracy, economical crisis. In addition, the study also sought to determine whether the amount and nature of stress experienced by teachers is related to certain personal and demographic variables. The results showed significant differences in the attitudes of teachers according to their age, gender and years of service in education.
