The rapid economic and cultural developments and the exponential growth in our times lead us to the opinion of the school units both from an economic and pedagogical perspective. Scholars place great emphasis on educational leadership, the characteristics and the attitude of leaders and the goals they will set for an effective school. Leaders, with their attitude and behaviour, will have to be able to motivate members or the school community towards cooperation, change of attitude, reformation of teaching methods with the aim of student progress and the emotional and social development of students. The greatest change for the leadership is the equal opportunities for all students in a word where information is disseminated all around us. The discovery of knowledge the cultivation of critical thinking, the development of research skills and the improvement of performance are some of the basic goal of leadership. This, however, can be achieved neither with the school book only nor face to face instruction. The school library, as part of the educational process contributes to the achievement of leadership goals. Many leadership goals are common to those of the school library. The school library can play a role in the accomplishment of the goals of analytical programmes, in instilling a love of reading the learning of research skills, the collection of reliable information and its codification, the creation of conditions concerning the cultural and environmental awareness of an individual, the encouragement of lifelong learning the reinforcement of the cooperation among parents, educationalists, school leadership and society in general. In many foreign countries, such as the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Canada, the USA and Australia, participates in the learning process in a decisive way. The library is centrally located within the building and the teacher- librarian is in close cooperation not only with the teachers to aid the in the daily learning process but also the school principal in administrative issues and issues of school outreach (cooperation with the parents, the town council and the local community). The aim of the present study is to pinpoint the role of the school units in Greece. The research was conducted in 16 schools of Primary and Secondary education and it shows that in Greece the state lacks a complete law framework and the libraries which are in operation do so thanks to volunteer work and the cooperation among teachers and school principals. Most of the libraries are in a small classrooms lacking in logistical support in no school is there a specialist. Despite the huge problems of the school units, we can see that they help the educational leadership in its pursuit of the improvement of learning results, the flourishing of cooperation, the exchange of cultures among teachers and the school outreach. Analysing the finding of the study in school libraries which are at a distance concerning logistical support from modern school libraries, we realise the role which a well –organised school library can actually play in the accomplishment of the goals of the administration of school units and the need for its creation in every educational institution.
