Pepper vein yellow virus-PeVYV (Bachelor thesis)
Bell pepper (Caspium annum L.) is an economically important crop plant of the nightshade family (Solonaceae). Viral diseases pose a major threat to pepper production, as at least 68 different viruses have been reported to infect pepper plants, resulting in a global yield reduction (Pernezny et al., 2003). Pepper vein yellow virus (PeVYV) is an emergent virus of pepper in Greece and worldwide. This is the first time that PeVYV has appeard in the Ierapetra of Crete in Greece (Lotos, 2016). In the present study the natural host range of the virus inducing yellowing in pepper crops was investigated. During 2017, symptomatic weeds samples of infected crops were collected from Ierapetra of Crete. Total RNA was isolated from all plant samples and reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was applied to detect and differentiate the virus. In total, 310 weed samples were tested and were the following: Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, Cladanthus muxtus, Conyza spp, Cynara cardunculus, Sonchus kirkii, Sonchus oleraceus, Sinapis L. Heliotropium europaeum, Stellaria media, Calystegia sepium, Lactuca serriola L., Euphorbia helioscopia, Medicago sativa, Melilotus sp., Trifollium spp, Malva spp, Papaver rhoeas, Oxalis perscapae, Solanum nigrum, Bifora radians M. Bieb and Parietaria judaica. The results showed that none of samples were detected of PeVYV, except from one sample which was detected of Beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV). The BMYV belongs to the family of Polerovirus and the positive sample of this virus was Solanum nigrum.
