Gender equality in our country was passed in 1984. Law 1566/85 allowed the two sexes to
participate with their application, to the process of occupying positions in the educational
administration. The profession of teacher has always been attractive to female gender, so in
the primary and higher education sector, the majority of staff is women. Analogically,
however, this is not the case in the field of management executives, where the highest
percentage is men.
This finding was the starting point for this work, which set out to investigate, because
there is this under-representation of women in managerial positions and especially in the field
of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education. The survey was conducted quantitatively,
with a questionnaire in which directors took part and answered questions about whether there
are gender barriers and obligations stemming from social stereotypes, their leadership style,
their perception of effective administration, their vision of education and the way it is
implemented. The results of the survey show that male and female managers are facing
similar obstacles and aids. Women have hardly experienced any discrimination on grounds of
sex in their assessment and in the administration from the subordinates. The style of women's
administration is collaborative, with a special emphasis on relationships and the maintenance
of a good climate among staff members, students and the manager. The vision and the kind of
leadership between men and women does not seem to have great differences. Women show
considerable capacity and commitment to the job, and many aim to continue their career in a
senior management position. Therefore, the lack of women in this area is not due to obstacles
due to social stereotypes, but rather because women do not claim such positions, the exercise
of power does not fit into their psychological composition, and it is necessary to engage in the
profession many hours outside the compulsory teaching hours.
