Introduction: A plethora of studies have shown the benefits, of owning a dog, in the health of the owners. Aim: Study of the differences in the levels of physical activity, body composition and dietary quality between dog owners and non dog owners. Data collection: Data from 56 adults – dog owners was collected from a veterinary clinic and an equal amount of non dog owners was collected. All the participants were collected from the same residential area. Methods: MDS questionnaire was used to examine the level of correlation between the diet of the participants and the Mediterranean diet. The EAT questionnaire was used to examine the general dietary habits and knowledge of the participants. The physical activity was measured with the use of step sensors that the participants carried with them for at least 3 days. Results: There was no evidence of higher or lower physical activity among the dog or non-dog owners. In the MDS questionnaire the non dog owners had a higher score ( p≤0.007 ). In the EAT questionnaire the dog owners had a higher score ( p≤0.004 ), but this result was reversed when the aspect of the educational years of the participants was taken in consideration ( p≤0.022 ). The dog owners had smaller triceps skinfold ( p≤0.037 ) and subscapular skinfold ( p≤0.002 ), and lower values in the % of total body fat compared to the non-dog owners ( p≤0.019 ). Conclusion: Dog ownership seems to effect in a positive way the composition of the human body, with this being independent too high or low physical activity and also the dietary habits and knowledge of the individual person.
