Σκολίωση : αξιολόγηση και αποκατάσταση (Bachelor thesis)

Λεωνίδου, Ευθαλία

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spine deformity characterized by lateral and rotational curvature of the spine. The most common form is idiopathic scoliosis, which usually becomes evident in the early adolescent years in approximately three percent of children under age 16 and has a genetic tendency although the specifics of the genetic influence have not been completely determined. The basic curve patterns are named after the location of the major curve e.g. thoracic, lumbar, thoracolumbar, double major, double thoracic. Scoliosis can be increased quickly and suddenly during periods of rapid growth. Various treatment approaches have been proposed for scoliosis, including simple observation, bracing, surgery and exercise to correct, prevent or stop the progression of the deformity. Undoubtedly, conservative treatment, which contains physiotherapy and bracing, is the most common. Actually, physiotherapy means specific exercises for scoliosis, which can be used alone or in combination with bracing according to individual indication. There are different types of exercises techniques for scoliosis and one of them is the Schroth method. The Schroth method is a physiotherapeutic approach that corrects spinal rotation and increase lung capacity with a rotation breathing technique. Also, it helps restore normal spinal position with pelvic corrections, and stabilizing isometric contractions. In fact, the goal of Schroth method is to teach the patients how to improve their posture during routine daily living, not just during therapy. In conclusion, the aim of this thesis is to understand and learn about the assessment and the physiotherapeutic management of patients with scoliosis.
