Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of food allergy on quality of life and diet quality in pediatric patients. Patients and Methods: In collaboration with the Pediatric Departments of Gastroenterology and Allergy of Hippocratic General Hospital of Thessaloniki, a survey was conducted with a sample of fifty (50) children, of which 14 were girls and 36 were boys from 3 to 14,5 years old. Firstly, the anthropometric data was measured, then the Body Mass Index (BMI) weight z-scores (WHz), height z-scores (HAz) and BMI z-scores (BMIz) were calculated with the softwares WHO Anthro 3.2.2. and WHO Anthro 1.0.4 Plus due to age. In order to evaluate the nutritional quality weekly questionnaires of dietary frequency, 24 hours recall questionnaires and the diet index “ The Diet Quality Index-International tool (DQI-I)”were used. The energy, macronutrients and micronutrients analysis of 24 hours recall questionnaire was performed with the use of the program “ Food Processor v 7.30” (ESHA, Portland, OR) Finally, for the evaluation of the quality of life were used two questionnaires: the questionnaire “Food Allergy-Specific Questionnaires for Quality of Life-the Parent's Form (FAQLQ-PF)” which was based on the opinion of parents of children with food allergy and the questionnaire “disabkids” for children with chronic diseases, which was developed by the program «Quality of Life and Management of Living Resources of the Fifth Framework of the European Union» and validated for the use in Greek language. Results: Most children had a normal nutritional status, with a small number being in danger of reaching under the growth curves (10%) and over the growth curves (12%), two overweight children (4%) and an obese one (2%). The DQI-I tool showed moderate-good diet quality with a mean score value 26 ± 10.75, while the average energy intake was close to the recommended with some extreme values and an average of 89.23 ± 26.17%. A statistical significance was found between the groups that were created for DQI-I scores with the criterion of BMI, in order to notice the group of chidren with the best DQI-I. Furthermore, a strong negative correlation was found between age and DQI-I and between age and the intake ratio. Moreover, a strong positive correlation was found between DQI-I and the intake ratio. Finally, for the diet quality results there was found a statistical significance between calcium intake and the number of food allergens. The results of the quality of life showed children and parent’s anxiety mainly for social restrictions, food labeling and fear of consumption of food allergens with statistical significance according to age, the DQI-I, sex, BMIz and number of food allergies. Conclusions: The diet quality and the intake ratio of children with food allergy are adversely affected with increasing age. Children with BMIz normal limits -1 1 have the best diet quality. The quality of life of children with food allergy is influenced by children and parent’s anxiety and fear of different issues depending on the age, the DQI-I, sex, BMIz and the number of food allergies. It is imperative that dietary assessment, guidance and monitoring of children with food allergy to improve the diet quality and the quality of life, so as to solve the daily problems of children and their parents.
