Introduction: This study was carried out in relation to the diplomatic assignment in the department of Aesthetics and Cosmetology of Technological Institute of Thessaloniki. The topic of the study has to do with the phenomenon of obesity and, as a result of it, the diabetes mellitus type 2, the metabolic syndrome and the dyslipidemia. Obesity is one of the most important problems of public health in developed countries and it is dangerously increasing in the developing world which follows the western lifestyle more and more. Obesity is a phenomenon that can be caused by multiple factors like genetic predisposition, hormonal or environmental causes, wrong nutritional choices and reduced physical activity. It is the main cause of a series of diseases for example the metabolic syndrome, the diabetes mellitus type 2 and dyslipidemia. Weight loss with long-term results can be succeeded, to some extent, by taking advantage of the current medical advances, the bariatric surgery, the medical treatment in combination with nutritional intervention and the increase in physical activity. In the future, the understanding of the complex genetic architecture of obesity is going to lead to new ways of treatment and prevention and it is going to increase the extensive understanding of the function that has to do with the adjustment of the energy balance in humans. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to define the methods of diagnosing obesity, the factors that cause obesity as well as the ways of treatment. Methodology: Review of the bibliography and reconsideration of both international and Greek articles about the topic. The articles, which were used, were studied thoroughly so as to obtain all the suitable information and the required data and also to produce the final results and draw conclusions. Conclusion: Conclusively, obesity is a difficult and complicated approach and for this reason its prevention is the best way of solving the problem
