Diabetes is a serious and common chronic disease that results from a complex interaction of estate-environment along with other risk factors such as obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Diabetes and its complications are major global public health problem, affecting almost all populations in both developed and developing countries with high rates of morbidity and mortality associated with diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes is increasing exponentially and there is a high prevalence rate in developing countries and to the populations that suffer "Westernization" or modernization. Multiple risk factors of diabetes, delayed diagnosis to display microvascular and macrovascular complications, life-threatening complications, the failure of current treatments and the financial cost to treat this disease necessitate the development of new effective treatment strategies and appropriate prevention measures for controlling diabetes.

| Abstract: | Ο διαβήτης είναι μια σοβαρή και κοινή χρόνια ασθένεια που προκύπτει από μια σύνθετη αλληλεπίδραση κληρονομικότητας-περιβάλλοντος μαζί με άλλους παράγοντες κινδύνου όπως η παχυσαρκία και ο καθιστικός τρόπος ζωής. Ο διαβήτης και οι επιπλοκές του αποτελούν σημαντικό παγκόσμιο πρόβλημα δημόσιας υγείας, που πλήττει σχεδόν όλους τους πληθυσμούς τόσο στις ανεπτυγμένες όσο και στις αναπτυσσόμενες χώρες με υψηλά ποσοστά νοσηρότητας και θνησιμότητας σχετιζόμενων με το διαβήτη. Ο επιπολασμός του διαβήτη αυξάνεται εκθετικά και παρατηρείται υψηλό ποσοστό επιπολασμού στις αναπτυσσόμενες χώρες και στους πληθυσμούς που υφίστανται «δυτικοποίηση» ή εκσυγχρονισμό. Οι πολλαπλοί παράγοντες κινδύνου του διαβήτη, η καθυστερημένη διάγνωση έως την εμφάνιση μικροαγγειακών και μακροαγγειακών επιπλοκών, οι απειλητικές για τη ζωή επιπλοκές, η αποτυχία των τρεχουσών θεραπειών και το οικονομικό κόστος για τη θεραπεία αυτής της ασθένειας καθιστούν αναγκαία την ανάπτυξη νέων αποτελεσματικών στρατηγικών θεραπείας και κατάλληλων μέτρα πρόληψης για τον έλεγχο του διαβήτη.
